BUS STOP: SALTS MILL & DAVID HOCKNEY

There are places that worth the hype and others that don´t have the hype but they are worth it!. Salts Mill is one of these. Maybe it is not a place in the touristic circuit, but the taste and the story behind it is really interesting.

In 1850, Titus Salt (a textil manufacturer & the largest employer in Bradford) announced his plans to build a new industrial community called Saltaire at a nearby beauty spot on the banks of the river Aire, in Yorkshire. It took twenty years to build. The Salt´s textile mill was the most modern in Europe. Noise, dust and dirt were reduced. He cut down on polluted air in order to create a healthier environment for the neighbourhood (which were his own workers) .That´s why he has been considered the greatest captain of industry in England, because always tried to care for all of his employees.

After 133 years of manufacturing, Salts Mill shut as a textil manufacturer in 1986. That was the beginning of a new artistic era for this fantastic place.

Jonathan Silver bought Salts Mill in 1987 and  transformed it into an art gallery and a really cool commercial place. Silver was best friends with painter David Hockney and his creations are all over the place. Jonathan died from cancer in 1997 at the age of 47, but his legacy still remains.

Salts Mill is about fifteen minutes by train from Leeds. A romantic and interesting place is waiting for your visit.
